About Criminal Justice Advocates Foundation
Criminal Justice Advocates Foundation (CJAF) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting access to justice, restorative research, and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions in the criminal justice system in Nigeria.
We believe that everyone deserves to be treated fairly and with respect, regardless of their background or the charges against them, and prioritise healing and rebuilding relationships between the victim, the offender, and the community rather than simply punishing offenders.
Our work includes research and advocacy on a variety of issues, including:
- Lengthy Pre-trial incarceration
- Slow criminal trials and appeals
- Disparities in the Criminal Justice System
- Mass incarceration
- Police brutality
- Prison conditions
Our Mission
Our mission is to:
- Advocate for reforms that will make the criminal justice system more fair and just.
- Provide support to people who have been impacted by the criminal justice system, including victims, defendants, and their families.
- Educate the public about the criminal justice system and the importance of reform.
- Promote Clinical Legal Education in tertiary institutions across Nigeria
Our Impact
We have had a significant impact on the criminal justice system. For example, we have:
- Represented and secured the release of several pre-trial detainees.
- Provided legal assistance to people who have been impacted by the criminal justice system.
- Conducted awareness campaigns on key criminal justice issue
